Directions
from Boston to the Route 124 Wapack Trail Head in New Ipswich, NH
1. Take your favorite route to Route 495 on the
northwest side of Boston, probably either Route 3 North to Route 495 South,
or Route 2 West to Route 495 North.
2. Follow Route 495 to Exit 31 - Route 119.
3. Take Route 119 West toward Groton and Townsend.
Follow Route 119 West 15 miles to the traffic light at Route 13 in the
center of Townsend.
4. Continue straight ahead on Route 119 West two miles
to the crossroads at West Townsend. Turn right onto an unnumbered road, at
signs that say Greenville, Mason, New Ipswich, To Rt 124, and/or To Rt 123.
5. Follow the unnumbered road, and bear left just
before the snowmobile dealer. When the road reaches New Hampshire, it
becomes Rt. 124. Continue on Rt. 124 West. At the stop sign about 3 miles
from West Townsend, continue straight ahead on Rt. 124 West.
6. About 11 miles from West Townsend, near the top of
the hill, look for Old Rindge Road on the right and Wapack Road (a private
road) on the left. The Wapack Trail crosses Route 123/124 here. You can park on
Route 123/124 here on the south (eastbound) side of the road - west of Wapack
Road and off the pavement - but you'll have to turn around to get there.
Please don't turn around in private driveways. Instead, continue on Route
123/124 until you find a safe place to turn around - probably at Philmart Drive
on the left (3/4 mile past the Wapack Trail).
7. Please follow all parking signs. Please do not park
on Wapack Road, and do not park at Windblown.
HIKING
From Route 124, the Wapack Trail starts south on
the Windblown Cross Country Ski Area driveway. Go straight ahead at the top
of the driveway toward our map bulletin board and follow the yellow
triangles. CLICK HERE to view a
map of the Wapack Trail through Windblown with important details. The top of Barrett Mountain is about 2 miles from Route 124.
Happy hiking!
Walk softly. Listen. Observe. Carry out everything you
carry in. Take only pictures -- and your memories.
